Alberta just saw its highest single-day coronavirus case increase ever

Oct 8 2020, 10:46 pm

364 new cases of coronavirus were detected in Alberta within the span of 24 hours.

This brings the total number of cases for the province to 19,718, and marks the highest daily increase that Alberta has seen in the entirety of the pandemic.

The last time the province saw a spike in daily cases this high was back on April 23, which saw 336 confirmed cases and 15 probable, a count that had been the high point of the graph up until today.

April 23 also marked exactly one week before Alberta saw its first peak for active coronavirus cases at 2,994, which was seen on April 30 when all lockdown measures were in place.

The active case count is currently at 2,097, with the majority landing in Edmonton.

Alberta’s second-largest city now has 1,251 known active infections, jumping by 134 when compared to Wednesday’s numbers. In comparison, Calgary has actually decreased its own number of active cases by 16, landing at 604 cases as of Thursday.

As a result of Edmonton’s disproportionate spike in cases, Alberta’s Chief Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw has instituted new voluntary measures for the city, including limits on the number of people allowed at private gatherings and masks being mandatory for all indoor work settings.

Thursday’s 364 newly detected cases come as the result of 16,408 tests conducted on October 7, part of the 1,472,658 tests completed to date on 1,095,515 people.

As always, Albertans are encouraged to practice safe physical distancing, wear a mask when out in public, maintain proper hand hygiene, and stay home if they are feeling sick.

Any Albertans with coronavirus symptoms can book a test through AHS’ website by filling out the self-assessment.
