Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in Southern Alberta, Waterton Park just earned a spot on a list of the most beautiful small towns in the mountains.
World Atlas released a list of the most beautiful small towns in the Rocky Mountains, and the small hamlet located in Waterton Lakes National Park made the cut.
“Reconnect with nature and find your own secret spot among the many hidden corners of Waterton Park, a true Canadian gem filled with natural beauty waiting to be explored.”

The hamlet’s history dates back to the early 1900s when the Western Coal and Oil Company from Vancouver started drilling for oil in the area. They constructed a cookhouse, bunkhouse, blacksmith shop, office, stable, and engine room, which was the start of the townsite.
In 1927, the Prince of Wales Hotel, which still stands today, opened and by the 1930s, the townsite boasted a range of modern facilities for visitors and residents alike, including restaurants, shops, recreational facilities, churches, and different services.
Today, Waterton Village is a charming destination for travellers, offering stunning mountain views, outdoor activities, and a variety of accommodations. World Atlas even touted it as “straight out of a Hallmark Christmas movie.”

Although it attracts around 400,000 visitors per year, it still offers a low-key, relaxing atmosphere far from the hustle and bustle of any city. Visitors can enjoy its stunning hiking and biking trails, take boat tours on the lake, stroll through the historic streets, or simply soak in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
Of course, the national park adds to the appeal with its pristine lakes, wildlife, and scenic drives that provide tons of opportunities for photos and adventure all around the townsite.
Jasper was the only other Canadian destination to make the list.
