The provincial government is auctioning off a donair costume, and the bids are getting a little out of hand in what is probably the most Albertan thing you’ll see all week.

The Alberta government has a website where it regularly auctions off items no longer required by various government departments. Usually, you’ll find items like old office equipment, tools, and other things of the sort, but sometimes there are gems.

So, when an Edmonton journalist tweeted a link to an adult-sized donair costume for sale on the Alberta Online Auction site, it’s not surprising that it caught a couple of people’s attention.

Listed on July 14 with a starting bid of just $50, this high-quality, 56″ tall donair costume is fixed with donair meat, lettuce, onion, tomato, and sweet sauce, the usual donair toppings found in Alberta, and a silver bodysuit “for that authentic tinfoil look.”

According to the website, the costume was a prop for an advertising campaign and is “no longer required by the department.”

This strange mash-up of government and food is one that is very Albertan; we certainly have a thing for donair and a flair for the unconventional when it comes to our government.

Reaction to the donair costume, as well as the bids, have been pouring in.

As of 9:30 am, the highest bid is sitting at $1,000. If you want to join in on the action, you have 26 more days to do so, as it is running longer than usual “due to the items’ rarity.”
