5 holiday activities to check out at this iconic Calgary event

Nov 25 2020, 5:02 pm

Calgary loves Christmas.

How can we not? Snow-cloaked streets, bundling up for winter excursions, and warming up by a crackling fire are all memories we associate with the most wonderful time of the year.

While things feel quite different this year, Christmas at Heritage Park is always a highlight during the festive season. Walking the decorated streets of Canada’s largest living history museum has become a favourite annual tradition for Calgarians.

Seeking to fill your holiday calendar? Here are some of the events and activities at Heritage Park that we’re most looking forward to this year.

Bring the family to Once Upon a Christmas

Once Upon a Christmas/Christmas at Heritage Park

This December, experience the magic of Christmas past. Once Upon a Christmas is a favourite annual event happening over three weekends (and a few days before Christmas). Take in a festive play at the Canmore Opera House, walk through the historic homes that are decked out for the season, or meet the big guy himself — Santa Claus!

This year, reservations are required for some of the individual activities to ensure physical distancing and safety. Every step is being taken so that we can enjoy the most wonderful time of the year.

When: December 5 to 20 (Saturdays & Sundays); December 21 to 23
Time: 10 am to 4 pm
Tickets: Online — $11 (general), $5.70 (child), $7 (youth), $8.95 (senior)

Plan a night out at Market Nights at Heritage Park

If you miss nights out on the town, Market Nights at Heritage Park has you covered — no reservations required.

Stroll past the quaint shops and artisan vendor booths, grab a bite to eat, and make s’mores by the fire. Patio weather or not, you’re invited to grab a drink at the Selkirk Winter Patio. You can even book a photo session with Santa for you or you and your pet!

When: November 26 to December 18 (Thursdays and Fridays)
Time: 5 pm to 9 pm
Tickets: Free

Visit the Christmas Tree Lot

The holiday season isn’t complete without a Christmas Tree. Visit the new Tree Lot so that you can bring the celebrations home with you. It doesn’t matter which tree you end up choosing; you can feel good knowing proceeds go towards supporting Heritage Park, a registered charity.

When: November 26 to December 24
Time: 10 am to 9 pm

Change up date night with Dinner and a Movie

You can still enjoy a movie and dinner out at Heritage Park. Dinner and a Movie nights feature themed three-course meals and beloved movies, perfect for a date night. Dinner at the Selkirk, a big screen set-up in Gasoline Alley Museum, and the good company you bring will be a Christmas memory you won’t soon forget.

Time: 5 pm to 10 pm
Tickets: Online — $46.95 + GST (includes dinner and a movie)

Enjoy Holiday Teas with your bubble

‘Tis the season for holiday tea at the famous Wainwright Hotel — purchase tickets in advance!
