The U.S. midterm elections have stirred up debate north of the border, with many in Canada wondering what it could mean for U.S.-Canada relations.
As many Americans marked an election night with many firsts and Democrats celebrated historic wins, Canadians kept a close eye, too. With relations between the two countries already strained, many are wondering what comes next.
There are plenty of reasons why the results of Tuesday’s elections matter to Canadians.
Canadians have felt the direct impact of a trade war with their country’s largest trade partner, with tariffs adding pressure to businesses and consumers. Many have responded by boycotting U.S. goods and taking their tourist dollars elsewhere. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated taunts about making Canada the 51st state, along with his habit of referring to former prime minister Justin Trudeau and Prime Minister Mark Carney as “governor,” have only added to tensions between the two countries.

It’s no surprise that Canadians are paying attention, and many shared their thoughts online. Several were thrilled by the results, cheering on their southern neighbours.
“Canadian here, looking forward to working together again one day,” one Redditor wrote. “Gotta say I was honestly convinced y’all were a lost cause for a while, but your election has reignited some hope.”
Another stated, “YAY!!! This Canadian actually teared up a little. THE NIGHTMARE IS NOT OVER, BUT IT’S DISBANDING.”

Last night the Democrats won the US Senate AND Congress. As a Canadian 🇨🇦 It is likely the most consequential election in my lifetime. The autocrat, President Trump, said he would accept the results.
My faith in America 🇺🇸 has been restored.
Drop the tariffs!

However, other Canadians weren’t quite as optimistic.
“Let’s be honest, gas prices are what determined the election result,” wrote one commenter. “Not that cynical narcissist threatening to annex Canada or Greenland. Americans still only think about their wallets, short-term.”
“All is not forgiven. Ya’ll got a LONG way to go still,” another stated. “Don’t drop the ball now that it’s rolling in a better direction.”
“This is just one night,” another Redditor wrote. “We have a LONG way to go before repairing our relationship with you guys. I have a LITTLE hope. But… yeah, I’m sorry, guys… I hope this is a good sign, but I’m still dubious.”
“While I understand your sentiment, actions have consequences, and this changes nothing,” one commenter stated. “The mask came off in the last two years, and Canada now understands that the U.S. is not our friend. We will continue to buy anything but American; we will continue to view the U.S. as a hostile neighbour; we will continue to move on with forging new alliances and trading partners; and we will leave the U.S. behind. I hope the rest of the world will do so as well.
“It is naive to think that what happened during the last two years will now just be swept under the rug. The North remembers.”
