Police in a small Alberta town recently responded to an unusual call involving a stubborn trespasser who refused to leave a business at closing time.

According to a tongue-in-cheek post from Hanna RCMP that has been making rounds online, they were called to the small business on Wednesday, April 8, after staff reported an individual lingering around instead of leaving for the night.

The suspect was described as disoriented, wearing all brown, standing approximately two feet tall, and weighing around 40 pounds. If that sounds like a beaver to you, that’s because it is.

Surveillance footage at the Hanna Freson Bros. captures the moment the front doors swung open as the furry suspect waddles inside, before wandering around the entryway in search of a way back out.

“A Hanna RCMP officer quickly responded and utilized de-escalation techniques on the subject,” said the post.

“It is possible the subject may have been attempting to steal the business’s firewood in the entrance-way to use for home-building, although this motive has not been confirmed at this time.”

After some coaxing, the beaver was ushered out of the business, and no use of force or arrest was required, the post continued.

“He is not considered armed or dangerous, although his tail was pretty big.”

Hanna is approximately 160 kilometres northeast of Calgary.
