If re-elected, the BC NDP party will provide a one-time $1,000 payment to families with an annual household income below $125,000 – with a sliding scale up to $175,000.

The announcement was made by BC NDP Leader John Horgan on Tuesday as part of the unveiling of his party’s platform, heading into the provincial election on October 24. The party also promised a one-time $500 direct deposit to single people earning less than $62,000 annually – with a sliding scale up to $87,000.

According to the NDP, the one-time payment is meant to help “ease the financial impact of COVID-19 for people in British Columbia who have been hit the hardest.”

The pandemic “has caused so much pain and hardship for so many people in British Columbia,” the platform states. “In a province with a good economy, we’re fortunate that so many have been able to navigate their way through the financial impacts. But for others, the financial stress is felt every day.”

And before the pandemic hit, “we had begun fixing the problems created through years of the BC Liberals working for people at the top while making ordinary people pay the price,” said Horgan. “That progress we’ve made together continues with the plan we’re presenting here by investing in people, and delivering the programs and services that are so important right now.”
