The Abbotsford Tulip Festival is opening to one lucky winner this spring

Earlier this month, Bloom, the Abbotsford Tulip Festival, announced that it would not be opening to the public for the 2020 season.

But while the five-week festival may not be opening to the public this year, organizers have announced a chance for a few lucky winners to experience the springtime event, all by themselves.

On Tuesday, the festival launched its latest contest on social media, in what they’re calling “the experience of a lifetime.” One lucky winner, as well as the members of their household, will be given a private three-hour visit at the tulip fields.

The visit can take place anytime between April 27 and May 1, 2020. It can also take place at any time of day, including sunrise and sunset, which are the most popular times to visit.

During the excursion, in addition to being in a field with millions of colourful flowers, the winner will be able to fill their own bucket with as many tulips as they can pick.

Alexis Szarek, founder of Bloom, says they wanted to allow a few visitors while respecting guidelines from health authorities.

“We wanted to find a safe way to allow at least a few people from the same household onto the site to enjoy the tulips while still adhering to provincial COVID-19 guidelines,” says Szarek in an emailed statement.

Information on how to enter can be found on the festival’s Instagram page, and a winner will be chosen on Friday, April 24. The winner will only be allowed to attend the festival with members of their own household.

Entering its fifth year, the Abbotsford Tulip Festival has become one of British Columbia’s most popular springtime events. Organizers hope to reopen fully to the public in 2021.
