Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a 34-year-old man died in Malton on Tuesday night.

According to a release from SIU, the investigation began around 9 pm on Tuesday night, after Peel Regional Police officers responded to a residence on Morningstar Drive for a domestic call.

“At the residence, officers became involved in an interaction with a man which involved the use of a conducted energy weapon,” SIU said. “The man went vital signs absent and was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.”

So far, five investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to this incident. Two subject officers and one witness officer have been designated, as well.

As part of their investigation, the SIU is urging anyone who may have information regarding this incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation.
