Canadians clap back at American's viral post dissing loonies and toonies

The thing about us Canadians is that we’re a patriotic bunch.
So when someone outside the country has the audacity to make fun of us — whether it’s our food, our pop stars, or, apparently, our money — we tend to go straight into defence mode.
That’s exactly what’s happening online, after a user on X made fun of our coins.
“I just found out Canadians call their coins loonies and toonies. You guys need to grow the f*ck up,” wrote @anthraxp1mp on Sept. 23.
His post went viral, racking up more than 2.5 million views, 1,500 comments, and 5,200 reposts so far.

As you might expect, Canadians had plenty to say about it.
Rather than taking the jab lying down, users from across the country (and even allies abroad!) flooded the replies with their own clapbacks, defending two of the most quintessentially Canadian words in our vocabulary.
god forbid a bitch is whimsical and fun https://t.co/yAQxuSPpXP

If you just found that out now you should be embarrassed by making this post.

Others reveled in the fact that, at least in Canada, our loons are on currency and not in office.
At least the loon is on our coin and not running our country. 😆

Personally, this clapback had me spitting out my water.
Our leader can pronounce Acetaminophen. And stays awake at work. https://t.co/TR4Y7Z13PQ

Canada is often referred to as a polite nation, but in some rare instances like these, we’re not afraid to get a little sassy.
To be fair we call you guys loonies as well.

The Canada goose weighed in, too.

One Canadian pointed out that our bills are more colourful compared to the dark, gloomy bills south of the border.
At least our bills aren’t boring all the same color like the U S

The loonie has been in circulation across Canada since 1987, yet @anthraxp1mp just discovered its name this week, in the year of our Lord 2026. Hmm.
If you just found that out now you should be embarrassed by making this post.

perhaps you could be a bit more playful

Canadians are rightfully pissed off by the user’s comment.
Don’t ever shit talk our loonies and toonies again Krill. I hope you’ve learned from this.

And things got personal.
Henceforth, a large Canadian dump will be known as a Krill.

At one point, @anthraxp1mp threw in the towel, admitting that “calling them that is actually really cool and mature.”
He also pleaded with people to stop sending him alleged death threats — although, at least from what was visible in the replies, it was hard to find any comments using such aggressive language.
Okay fine i change my mind calling them that is actually really cool and mature please stop sending me death threats

At the end of the day, people can make fun of our accents, our weather, and even our obsession with saying “sorry,” but come for the loonies and toonies (or our double-doubles), and we Canadians will have plenty of change to give.
