Montreal's McGill University will soon offer a diploma in cannabis production
Montreal’s McGill University will soon be offering students the chance to earn a diploma in cannabis production.
The university says it wants to create more options for students as the federal government plans to legalize cannabis by summer 2018.
“The courses are definitely still in the works,” Anja Geitmann, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at McGill, told Daily Hive.
Geitmann says that if everything goes smoothly, the two-semester program should be made available to students by the beginning of the 2019 school year.
“The diploma program will enable people who already have the proper training to get additional training for the industry,” she said.
The program will likely be tailored to students who hold bachelor’s degrees in related fields, such as plant sciences, biochemistry, and horticulture.
Geitmann says that McGill will be working with industry leaders to give students hands-on training. Industry professionals will also be invited to teach students in the classroom for some courses.
“Tens of thousands of experts and workers will be needed in this industry. We are responding to the demand for high-quality workers in the medical marijuana sector,” said Geitmann.
Although McGill is still working on the details, there will be two one-day workshops in May offered to students in the school’s continuing studies program.
