Dollarama products Canadians say just aren't worth the money

Online forums dedicated to Dollarama are full of recommendations for some of the best things to buy at the popular Canadian discount chain.

Whether it’s an unexpected name-brand find or a surprisingly good deal, shoppers are always sharing their favourite Dollarama purchases. Popular picks range from snacks, candy, and chocolate (4Fun chocolate in particular gets a lot of love) to toiletries and affordable home organization products.

But not everything on Dollarama’s shelves is a bargain, and some products may be better left on shelves.

“What’s the worst thing to buy?” one shopper asked in a Reddit post.

Many were quick to weigh in, sharing their thoughts on products they’ve regretted buying and wouldn’t recommend picking up on their next Dollarama run.

Knit and crochet kits

Shoppers who enjoy arts and crafts have expressed frustration with the store’s crochet kits, claiming that the photos have little resemblance to the final product.

One shopper who tried several beginner-level kits said people would be better off saving their money, stating that the kits are “NOT ‘great for beginners.'”

“In fact, I think these kits would kill any interest any beginner would have in learning to crochet,” they wrote in their review. “I made each of these true to the pattern provided, and in the case of the bat, the pattern wasn’t even a real pattern. It was pure AI hallucination.”

But while the crochet kits weren’t a hit, others say they’re fans of the cross-stitch kits.

Chargers

Several shoppers also warned against buying portable chargers and charging cords at Dollarama, saying they’ve had problems with their quality and how long they last.

“Probably any of those portable chargers or just chargers in general,” one person wrote. “They work for like two seconds then stop working.”

“I second the chargers; they break within a day or two no matter how delicately I handle them,” another commented.

“Phone chargers, they’ll suddenly stop working after a month,” one stated.

Kitchenware

Dollarama regularly stocks plenty of kitchenware, from cooking utensils to bakeware, but not everything gets rave reviews.

One shopper said Betty Crocker plastic storage containers were among the worst things they’d bought at the store.

“They used to have the Rubbermaid ones which were okay, but now it’s all Betty Crocker,” they commented.

Can openers were another common complaint.

Several shoppers said they’ve also had trouble using theirs, with one claiming their Dollarama purchase “imploded on itself” while they were trying to open a can.

“Yes, the can openers suck!” one agreed.

So, what is worth buying?

Shoppers say Betty Crocker silicone spatulas are among the store’s worthwhile finds.

Children’s toys

Dollarama dedicates an entire section to children’s toys, but some of them aren’t worth the money.

One shopper shared that a Dollarama doll they bought was a disappointment, writing that its “hair falls out, leg fell off, none of the shoes fit. My daughter was not impressed.”

Another said a remote-control car they picked up only worked for 10 minutes, adding, “I didn’t expect much, but I thought we would at least get a day out of it.”

Clearly, some Dollarama finds are better than others. What are some of your hits and misses? Let us know in the comments.
