The world's best airport is now home to the world's highest indoor waterfall (PHOTOS)

You’re not a true traveller until you’ve endured a gruelling overnight layover by cuddling your backpack on a cement floor. (Why must the airport benches have armrests in between? That’s our napping space.) It’s the ultimate travel initiation. Just throw on your eye mask and hope for no crying babies.

Yes, travel days can be taxing. But layovers don’t always have to suck.

Especially not when the airport is as cool as Changi Airport in Singapore.

There’s a reason this airport has been named the best in the world for six years in a row. It has a five-story playground, a rooftop swimming pool, free foot massages, free arcade games, a movie theatre, and even a freaking sunflower field. There are little robot helpers roaming around keeping things under control. It was even transformed into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter last year.

People come to Changi Airport to take advantage of the amenities even if they aren’t travelling, and it sure makes for a good layover, if you can swing it.

But this April, Changi Airport has stepped up its game even further with the addition of a new mixed-use complex known as Jewel.

This 10-storey addition is built over 3.5 hectares of land, linking terminals 1, 2, and 3, easing accessibility in one of the world’s busiest airports. Changi Airport handled a whopping 65.6 million passengers last year.

So what can you expect from this epic layover destination?

Jewel has mastered the gardening game, and your next door neighbour could take a landscaping lesson or two from these guys. The Forest Valley or Canopy Park make up an indoor oasis for nature lovers. The complex is home to five storeys of gardens and walking trails, because there’s no better way to stretch your legs after a nine-hour flight than to hike it off.

There are Sky Nets, Canopy Mazes, and slides to play on. The whole idea is bringing the outdoors in to help passengers rejuvenate.

But perhaps the best part of these offerings is the Rain Vortex, including the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, clocking in at 40 metres tall. At night it becomes a mystical light and sound show that’s basically Avatar IRL.

It’s no surprise that the attraction has turned into a huge Instagram opportunity, with guests sharing their experiences with #SeeJewel. Visitors have already caught onto the fact that the waterfall is the ultimate Instagram backdrop.
