More than 8,000 Ring Video Doorbells are being recalled across Canada because they can overheat and may catch fire, causing burns.

Health Canada issued the recall of the second generation of the smart doorbells on November 10.

8,700 affected products were sold in Canada from June 2020 to October 2020.

The Ring Video Doorbells (2nd Gen) come with both security and wood screws for installation, Health Canada says.

“If the wood screws are used in place of the security screws during installation, the battery can be damaged and may overheat, posing a potential fire or burn hazard,” according to the recall.

However, if the doorbell is installed correctly, there is no risk of fire or burns.

The doorbells being recalled have the model number 5UM5E5. Ring Video Doorbell owners can determine if their item is part of the recall by entering the serial number online.

Health Canada says all known consumers have been contacted by the manufacturer. They are asking anyone with uninstalled products to download a new user guide from Ring’s website.

As of November 5, Health Canada says Ring has received one reported incident in Canada and no one was injured.
