Sun Peaks named one of National Geographic's Best Winter Trips in 2019
Canadian winters are great. There’s snow, ice, more snow, and from coast to coast to coast, there’s a plethora of exciting winter activities to choose from.
Whether it’s ice skating on frozen lakes in the shadow of the Rockey Mountains, enjoying the great white north’s epic Christmas celebrations, or taking in an annual gathering of polar bears — from a safe distance of course — there’s no limit to the wintery goodness Canada has to offer.
However, one Canadian city has made its way onto National Geographic’s list of the Best Winter Trips 2019. Ranked alongside Salzburg, Austria (the birthplace of the Silent Night), Christmas Cherol, Christmas Island near Java, and even the iconic New York City, is Sun Peaks, British Columbia.
“Snowshoeing, dogsledding, storm-watching, and the illuminated Capilano Suspension Bridge all make British Columbia a favourite winter destination,” writes the publication. “But if you’re planning on skiing, ski-biking, or snow-limo-riding—avoid the long lift lines at Whistler and head for Sun Peaks, Canada’s second largest ski area, where three powdery peaks and 4,270 acres of skiable terrain lead down to one central village.”
Tucked away in the BC interior, the resort town gets up to 2,000 hours of sun every single year, so you’ll likely get to catch more than a few rays as you carve up the light, dry powder.
