What is a cannabis sommelier?

A cannabis sommelier is a master of product appreciation and best practices, like when you go to a restaurant and a wine sommelier pairs a product that best suits the dinerā€™s preference. It is someone that can really appreciate the cannabis plant or any derivative of the product it can make.

The course is necessary for anyone that wants to work in the industry, whether youā€™re looking to incorporate cannabis into your business through media, retail, medical while also benefitting the canna-curious.

Students will learn to connect with the right product based on factors like experience level, preference for quality, potency and/or ratio.

What are some of the key topics covered in the course?

We learn to analyze a wide array of cannabis varieties based on their place of ancestry, and we learn to gauge quality based on physical analysis and tastings. We also learn about the different types of products that can be made, the best practices and methods of production for each and how to provide compliant, effective and compassionate customer care.

How can this course help enhance someoneā€™s knowledge/relationship with the plant?

Students will learn to see cannabis in light of its local history and tradition, and will gain key sensory skills and insights that provide the authentic depth and inspiration to become a true cannabis expert.

What are some things to look for when identifying quality cannabis?

Not all lineages can be judged by the same norms. A whispy African haze and a Hindu Kush variety are like apples and oranges. Generally speaking, we look for things like strong or ‘loud’ aromas, healthy trichome expression (the tiny crystals that contain the plant’s cannabinoids and terpenes), trim, and above all, a smooth and tasty smoke.

What are some major defects to look for?

Lack of smell, lack of moisture, loss of coloration and harsh, bitter smoke. Black ash is also an indication of poor quality.

Why is it important to learn about cannabis if you plan on consuming?

Understanding there is a world beyond ā€˜Indicaā€™ and ā€˜Sativaā€™ and starting to think about how specific lineages differ from each other opens up a whole new world of product appreciation. Also, paying close attention to the potency and ratio of product, while keeping best practices in mind helps clients safely navigate the diverse realm of products to find the one that is right for them.
