Solo travel is on the rise, and Canada has just been named among one of the top destinations for those who enjoy exploring on their own.

Travel + Leisure recently named its top 25 picks of the best international destinations for solo travellers, and Canada was on the list. More people are choosing not to wait for friends or family to line up their schedules, and instead choosing to set out on their own.

According to Travel + Leisure, travelling alone “can be one of life’s most rewarding experiences.”

“The benefits range from the freedom to fully indulge your every whim to a sense of empowerment and opportunities for reflection, self-discovery, and new friendships,” it stated.

And there has been more interest in solo travel, according to travel company Explore Worldwide. Social media platforms like TikTok have more than 2.5 million videos with the hashtag #solo travel, while the number of Google searches related to solo travel is also on the rise.

“When you’re looking to travel alone, these are the safest, easiest, and most exciting countries to visit,” reads the report.

The roundup includes the best destinations for solo travellers, and among the top picks is Canada. That certainly tracks, considering Canada recently ranked among the 20 most peaceful countries.

Canada was a clear choice for the diversity of its landscape — from the slopes of B.C. to the bustle of Toronto, there’s plenty to keep tourists entertained. It’s an especially attractive option for American tourists as it’s accessible “in terms of language, exchange rate, and transportation.”

or travellers, it’s a matter of finding the time to fit as much as they can in their schedule. Some suggestions include exploring Toronto’s arts and culture and stopping by the Harbourfront Centre, food tripping through St. Lawrence Market, or checking out the city’s many unique neighbourhoods.

It’s easy for travellers to stay active in Vancouver, whether it’s cycling along the scenic waterfront or crossing the “vertigo-inducing” Capilano Suspension Bridge. In Alberta, exploring Banff National Park’s famous glacial lakes is a must, as is taking in the Rocky Mountain vistas.

For Canadians looking to travel solo, other countries on the list include Thailand, Albania, Costa Rica, Germany, Vietnam, Iceland, New Zealand, Mexico, Switzerland, Chile, Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Denmark, Japan, Norway, Ireland, Uruguay, Finland, Scotland, Australia, Croatia, Egypt, and England.
