Free Outdoor Screening of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet

  • What: Reel 2 Real is hosting a free outdoor screening of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet. Inspired by the Lebanese poet’s work, Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet is a wondrous and richly-animated adaptation of one of the most recognized and best-selling volumes of poetry of all time. It will be preceded by free animation workshops at Performance Works, from 5-8:30 pm.

Coquitlam Summer Concert Series

  • What: The three-part series will be themed around the musical genres of jazz, classic rock, and Motown. The event kick-off on Friday, July 13 will be a jazz-themed night, as the members of the Beauty Shop Dolls sing in perfect harmony. They will be followed by The Hummingbird Brigade, a New Orleans style funky-jazz brass band including some of Vancouver’s top jazz musicians.

Red Bull 400

A runner races up the Red Bull 400 course in Whistler.

  • What: Known as the “steepest race in the world,” the almost-vertical race challenges competitors with a single objective: First one to the top wins. Testing both speed and endurance, this race challenges runners with 400 metres on a 37° incline from the bottom of a ski jump, straight to the top.

Fifth Annual Ultimate Car Show

  • What: More than 300 classic, muscle, premier, exotic and specialty vehicles will be on display at the fifth annual Ultimate Car Show, running from 10 am to 3 pm. This free, family event kicks off with a pancake breakfast starting at 8 am and paid for by donation and includes an outdoor barbecue, beer garden and live entertainment.

The Summer Festival 2018

Glitter Unicorn Festival

  • What: With lively entertainment and delicious treats, the Glitter Unicorn Festival is both a “fun-raiser” and a “fundraiser.” An assortment of freezies will be on sale to keep you cool in the summer weather. Admission is free but all sales will be donated to the Surrey Food Bank. A bottle drive will also be on-site so bring your recyclable bottles for donation.

Symphony at Sunset 2018

  • What: The free, outdoor concert is part of the VSO’s lineup of summertime outdoor concerts to celebrate its 100th anniversary. A pre-event begins at 7:15 pm with student ensembles by the VSO School of Music. This will be followed by the main event performed by the VSO from 8:30 pm to 10 pm, with the orchestra playing symphonic hits such as Leonard Bernstein, excerpts from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and John Williams’ scores to Star Wars. Food trucks will also be present at the site for the event.

Wiener dog running/Hastings Racecourse

  • What: As part of their Dog Days of Summer, Vancouver’s most adorable and athletic Wiener Dogs will be taking to the track to compete for $500 cash and a fabulous doggy prize pack. Plus, there’s also going to be food trucks, craft beer, and live music, all afternoon long.

Along the way, Lloyd will share his knowledge of the prospectors and history of mining in the area, look at historical artifacts and minerals, and tell stories using old maps and photographs. Bring water and lunch. Wear sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather.
