The Gay Village's iconic decorative balls have been set up for the last time (PHOTOS)
The rows of multi-coloured decorative balls that hang over a stretch of Ste. Catherine Street have been set up in the Gay Village for the last time.
The 180,000 ball installation, first put up in 2011, will be permanently retired this September, allowing for one final run this spring and summer.
Originally, the landscape architect who designed the balls, Claude Cormier, wanted to have the balls taken down for the last time and retired this past fall, but a lobby to keep them up onĀ MayorĀ ValĆ©rieĀ Planteās Facebook pageĀ changed his mind.

In 2011, the installationās decorative balls were exclusively pink until 2017 when all the colours of the rainbow were added and dubbed ā18 shades of gay.ā
According to its architect, the plastic balls donāt last very long hanging in the sun and rain all summer and often have to be replaced.
Cormier claims it was never his intention to keep them up for long, but has had a change of heart since Montrealerās overwhelming support to have it return this spring.
Montrealers flocked to Instagram to share pictures of the iconic balls, which are slated to be completely installed in the coming days.
