Vancouver’s Sunset Ice Rink on East 51st Avenue has been temporarily shut down due to issues with its refrigeration system.
According to the Vancouver Park Board, maintenance technicians detected a mechanical problem with the rink’s ice plant on Tuesday.

“We’ve determined that the rink’s underfloor heat exchanger failed – a key component which keeps the ice’s subfloor at the right temperature,” said the Park Board in a statement sent to Daily Hive.
The maintenance team determined it needs to remediate the refrigeration system, which could take several weeks or longer.
The Park Board says it recognizes the closure is disruptive to patrons, and it is “now making every effort to provide alternative arrangements.”
Staff is working to free up ice time for patrons in neighbouring municipalities and private arenas.
Details on alternative rink options are available on the Park Board website.
