Another co-working office company is establishing a major presence in downtown Vancouver’s Gastown district.

Spaces is taking over the entire Ormidale Block building at 151 West Hastings Street in Gastown, immediately adjacent to Simon Fraser University’s Woodwards campus.

The Amsterdam-based co-working company’s newest extension, one of three new locations in the city, will be 35,000 sq. ft. over five levels.

The 1900-built building has been undergoing a significant retrofit and expansion that retains the Romanesque architecture of the West Hastings Street facade and creates a contemporary geometric look for the rear of the building.

Century Group owns the property and B+H Architects was behind the redesign.

Within this Spaces location, there will be a mix of team rooms, open format co-working spaces and individual desks, a business club, and large rooftop patio open 24/7.

This Gastown office, opening this summer, will be Spaces first location in Vancouver.

The other locations are a 70,000 sq. ft. space within the old Tom Lee Music building on Granville Street and a 40,000 sq. ft. space within the new South Flatz tech building in the False Creek Flats. Both of these locations will open towards the end of 2018.

“The shift in the way people are working is driving our significant expansion in Vancouver,” said Wayne Berger, Executive Vice President of Spaces, in a statement.

“Our goal is to secure unique and aspirational office space and buildings in Vancouver so we can turn them into collaborative and inspiring work environments for start-ups, global enterprise partners, entrepreneurs, innovators and leaders. We are focusing on growing in top-class buildings in prime locations in Vancouver so we can give our community a place to network, create and grow.”

This adds to the growing number of multi-location co-working companies in Vancouver, such as WeWork, which has an 80,000 sq. ft. space in Bentall III and a 53,000 sq. ft. space in Bentall II. Another WeWork location will also open on the top floors of the Hudson’s Bay flagship store in downtown.

Vancouver-based The Network Hub also now has three locations across the region.
