An 86-year-old man who was assaulted outside Costco in downtown Vancouver in December has died of his injuries, police say.

In a release, Vancouver Police said the altercation occurred on Expo Boulevard, just after 11 am on December 20.

Police believe the elderly man hit his head on the ground after being pushed by a 57-year-old man.

The suspect fled on foot, while others performed first aid on the victim until he was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

The suspect, an East Vancouver resident, was arrested at his home about two hours later.

In a release, Sgt. Jason Robillard called the case “an isolated and tragic incident,” and said there is no concern for public safety.

The investigation is still underway and no charges have yet been laid against the suspect, say police.
