GO Transit users to have TTC fares cut in half

Toronto commuters are about to receive some serious savings as Don Peat, Director of Communications in the Mayor’s Office, has confirmed that TTC fares are about to be cut in half for GO Train users:

We have never had an agreement on fares before. This is a good step in the right direction towards SmartTrack. This is the first step in fare integration, not the only step and not the end of the story, but a great beginning.

The TTC’s budget is protected and will not be negatively impacted.

Ultimately, this agreement will mean if you ride a mix of the TTC, UP Express and GO to get around Toronto, transit will now be less expensive.

As well, TTC riders transferring to GO or UP Express will also receive $1.50 off of their GO/UP Express fare while GO riders transferring to the TTC will get $1.50 off of their TTC fare.

The Ontario government has promised to reimburse the cost of the discounted fares, meaning neither the City of Toronto nor the TTC budget will be impacted by the change.

However, according to The Star, the discount will only be eligible for those using a PRESTO Card.

The slash in fares will affect some 50,000 daily commuters in the GTA.
