The start of a new school year can be pretty stressful all on its own, but once the assignments start rolling in the stress can mount even higher.

To combat the pressures of university life, sometimes all you need to do is find a jovial watering hole – but there’s not that many actually at Simon Fraser University.

So here are 10 places you can find a drink near SFU, both on and off campus, from traditional old pubs to new craft breweries.

Pubs

Highland Pub

  • What: The Highland Pub is a great spot on campus to grab a drink during the week (hours are limited to weekday only). It’s a laid-back spot that’s perfect for groups and knocking back a few beers, which are served on tap.
  • Where: 8888 University High Street, Burnaby
  • When: Open on Mondays from 11 am to 5 pm, and from Tuesday to Friday, from 11 am to 11 pm

Club Ilia

  • What: Club Ilia, located on Burnaby Mountain, is a favourite student haunt, thanks in large part to the on-campus eatery and lounge’s game nights, ladies nights and special craft beer sampling. It’s not the rowdiest of places, but it is still a fun place to drink and mingle.
  • Where: 8902 University High Street, Burnaby
  • When: Open from Monday to Saturday, from 11 am to 11 pm

The Burrard Public House

  • What: A little further afield than the two bars above, The Burrard Public House (not on campus) is a comfortable place to drop by for a drink and a bite to eat. The St John’s Street pub offers an array of wines, cocktails, craft beers, and fine spirits. Enjoy $1 off draught beer and $2 off all the pubs appetizers on Taps & Aps Tuesdays.
  • Where: 2414 St Johns Street, Port Moody
  • When: Open Sunday to Thursday, from 11 am to midnight, and on Friday and Saturday, from 11 am to 2 am

Rocky Point Taphouse

  • What: Nearby the Burrard Public House is the Rocky Point Taphouse, which has 23 taps showcasing local breweries like Moody Ales and Yellow Dog Brew. Enjoy 39 cent wings on Thursdays, and $5.50 pints almost every day of the week.
  • Where: 2524 St Johns Street, Port Moody
  • When: Open Sunday to Thursday, from 11 am to midnight, and on Friday and Saturday, from 11 am to 2 am

  • What: One of the best features of The Hop & Vine Tap House is their liquor store. It’s a great place to stock up on booze for all your post-studying drinking needs. The pub itself is low-key and caters to a laid-back and often local crowd.
  • Where: 1601 Burnwood Avenue, Burnaby
  • When: Open from Sunday to Thursday, 11 am to midnight, and Friday and Saturday, from 11 am to 1 am

Breweries

  • When: Open Monday to Thursday, from 2 until 10 pm, Friday and Saturday, from noon to 11 pm, and Sunday from noon to 9 pm

Yellow Dog Brewing

  • What: A little further along Brewers’ Row is Yellow Dog Brewing, a family-run brewery swiftly making a name for itself with its Take A Walk and Play Dead brands. Enjoy a flight in the tasting area out back.
