What should be the official food of Vancouver?

Ladies and gentleman, the city of Halifax has just declared that their official food is the donair. While this ruling in and of itself may provoke lots of raised eyebrows and/or objections, it also prompts us to ask: What should be the official food of Vancouver?

Vancouver has plentiful culinary claims to fame that span the categories. The California Roll was invented here. We have the most incredible seafood, including gorgeous B.C. salmon. Vikram Vij makes his home here, and is a local legend. We have killer food from a variety of Asian cultures. We are home to the Japadog, which is the street food that happened to have kicked off the food cart trend–another staple on the Vancouver food scene. Our chain restaurants have enjoyed long lifespans (Cactus, Earls, JOEY, White Spot, etc.) with many advancing eastward. Or we could kick solids out of bed and make a case that our best food is craft beer…or coffee.

Damn. There’s a lot going on here. Can we narrow it to just one?

A casual survey conducted this morning in the Vancity Buzz office yielded a lot of inappropriate suggestions, and some very specific dishes (Eggs Benny with Smoked Salmon, for example), but the overwhelming response was sushi.

It does make sense.Vancouver has a dizzying array of sushi restaurants at all price points dotting the city map, and access to fresh, delicious seafood. And, as one staffer put it: “Vancouver’s obsession with sushi borders on psychotic.” There are many Instagram accounts dedicated just to exploring Vancouver’s many (many, many, many) sushi options. It’s even available served on naked people.

So, should the City of Vancouver be interested in joining Halifax in designating an official city food, we hereby put forward a motion to have it be sushi.
