8 Vancouver studios at the forefront of VFX and Animation

Vancouver is home to some of the best Visual Effects (VFX) and Animation studios in the world. From box-office blockbusters to television treasures, these studios and their animators are delivering big hits to Hollywood.

Here are eight Vancouver studios at the forefront of VFX and Animation.

1. Sony Pictures Imageworks

Sony Pictures Imageworks has an impressive portfolio of work, including on Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad, Disney’s Alice Through The Looking Glass, and Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy.

2. Industrial Light and Magic

In 2013, ILM planted roots in Vancouver and just a year later, the company expanded into a new 30,000 square-foot studio space in Gastown. ILM currently works on massive properties like Star Wars and Warcraft.

3. Image Engine

Since opening in 1995, Image Engine has worked on a variety of films in diverse genres, including Straight Outta Compton, Power Rangers and Deadpool. In 2015, Image Engine merged with Cinesite.

4. Moving Picture Company

MPC has brought The Martian and The Jungle Book to big screens, while working on next year’s Wonder Woman and other projects.

5. Atomic Cartoons

Atomic Cartoons, a Thunderbird Films company, is a full-service animation studio located in Vancouver’s busy Animation District. Atomic creates, produces and finances animation properties such as Mariachi Zombie and Netflix’s Beat Bugs.

6. Bardel

What began as a small family business making hand-crafted animation has evolved into a digital studio spanning three state-of-the-art facilities. Bardel has worked with a huge array of collaborators, including Nickelodeon, Disney, Cartoon Network, DreamWorks and Warner Brothers.

Over the course of its 19-plus years of experience in animated production, Rainmaker has partnered with some of the most recognizable brands in entertainment, including Mattel, The Weinstein Company, Hasbro, Lionsgate, and Sony.

Titmouse is a full‐service animation production company with studios in Vancouver, Los Angeles, and New York. Their resume includes Disney’s Kirby Buckets, Fox’s Son of Zorn, and Nickelodeon’s TMNT.
