Start your New Year off with a night of laughter! From improv and stand-up to spoken word, here is our list of 10 great comedy events in Vancouver this January.

Throwdown International TheatreSports Festival

  • What: Vancouver TheatreSports rocks the laughs with its annual improv celebration, Throwdown International TheatreSports Festival. Throwdown welcomes TheatreSports teams from around the world for head-to-head matches with each other and local teams comprised of VTSL’s top improvisers.

The X-Files Season 11 Premiere Party

  • What: Storm Crow is showing the season 11 premiere of the X-Files hosted by the rogue agents of X-files podcasting: Courtney & Alison of the XX-Files Podcast. Along with the screening, there will be spooktacular raffle prizes, fan contests and themed drinks for the evening. Proceeds from the raffle will go to the Downtown East Side Women’s Centre.

Talent Time: Anti-S.A.D BBQ!

  • What: Paul Anthony and Talent Time battle Seasonal Affective Disorder with an old fashion BBQ. There will be a picnic on the stage under the hot sun, Ukrainian song and dance by Slava and Anya, comedy by Gavin Matts and Nayana Fielkov, and more.

LiGHTS! Improvised Sketch Comedy Show 

  • What: 12 of Vancouver’s hottest improv comedians present back-to-back short sketch ideas that have never been rehearsed or performed for an audience before.

Angry & Afraid: A comedy show about your hates and fears

  • What: A therapeutic comedy show about all your hates and fears, featuring stand up and sketch comedy from Jacob Samuel, Fatima Dhowre, Ryan Williams, Steev Letts, Proud Of You, and host Kody Audette.

Improv X Music aka Impro Allegro!

  • What: Laughter is music for the heart! Join The Fictionals when they mashup comedy and music at Cafe Deux Soleils! The evening of hi-fi hilarity features special guest musician Jess Tollestrup!

Adam Sandler

  • What: A successful actor, writer, producer and musician, Sandler’s films have grossed more than $3 billion worldwide and include box office hits such as Grown UpsJust Go With It, and You Don’t Mess With the Zohan. In 2014, Sandler signed a deal with Netflix to produce and star in four original movies. The first three films, The Ridiculous 6The Do-Over and Sandy Wexler, were the most-watched movies on Netflix to date, which led to Sandler signing another deal with Netflix for four more.

Margaret Cho

  • What: Five time Emmy- and Grammy- nominated Margaret Cho takes the stage on a wildly funny night with Fresh Off the Bloat content that will have you rolling in the aisles. Part of Whistler Pride and Ski Festival, mature audiences only.

Between Three Wheels with the TTP

  • What: Between Three Wheels is a spoken weird talk show brought to you by the Tiny Tricycle Poets: Emma Field, Angelica Poversky, and Andrew Warner. The trio have competed together and against each other in local poetry competitions like BC’s Hullabaloo and at national festivals like Voices of Today.

Ricky Gervais Humanity Tour

  • What: Perhaps best known as the creator and star of The OfficeExtras, and Derek, Ricky Gervais has had a busy couple of years with an international theatrical and DVD release, alongside an exclusive partnership with Netflix USA, for mockumentary comedy feature film David Brent: Life On The Road. Last year, Special Correspondents, which Gervais wrote, directed and starred in, was launched on Netflix worldwide, and Gervais also hosted the Golden Globes for a 4th time.
