Third off-leash dog jumps to death from BC Place ledge

Dec 19 2017, 8:49 pm

BC Place officials will take measures to prevent animals from jumping over a ledge and falling eight metres down to their death.

It is Pavco’s response to the matter following a third fatal incident that occurred last Thursday, reports the Vancouver Sun. A six-year-old German shepherd succumbed to its injuries at Yaletown Pet Hospital after attempts to revive the animal failed.

A fourth incident happened in May 2014 when a dog fell off the ledge and suffered serious injuries. In each incident, the owners did not leash their dogs.

All of the incidents occurred near the stadium entrance at Terry Fox Plaza, where there is a waist-high ledge that protects people from falling off the concourse and onto Expo Boulevard’s route underneath the area. The ledge that encloses the concourse has been unchanged since the stadium was first built in 1983.

BC Place has indicated that it will explore solutions such as the installation of fences and barriers in the area.
