The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide: The Flying Pig

Jun 1 2016, 1:14 am

We’re taking a tasty tour of Vancouver’s many brunches to create The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide. This week we’re enjoying long established brekkie favs at The Flying Pig in Olympic Village.

Home to a beautifully furnished space and a reliably good menu, The Flying Pig is an excellent choice for weekend brunch. Luckily, with three locations to choose from, Yaletown, Gastown, and the recently opened Olympic Village branch, diners are never too far away from a great Flying Pig feed.

Located on West 2nd Avenue, The Flying Pig in Olympic Village (the newest member of the clan), is clean, comfortable and rustic by design.

The restaurant, which seats around 136 diners, is strikingly similar in both look and feel to the other two more established branches, and features the same woody accents and furnishings (think white leather stools and solid wood high-top tables) that the other two possess.

On top of that, the popular nouveau Canadian bistro is home to the same charming farm-to-table ambiance.

The restaurant also shares the same menu as its Yaletown and Gastown counterparts, which at brunch includes a varied selection of appies, brekkie, lunch, and side plates, all comprised of fresh, local ingredients. Not adhering to a strictly brunch-centered menu, The Flying Pig makes sure that there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

As far as breakfast plates go, The Flying Pig offers an assortment of dishes, including brioche French Toast with a maple blueberry compote ($12.50), smoked salmon Eggs Benedict ($15.50), Chef Erik’s Croque Madame ($13.50), wild mushroom, asparagus and goat cheese frittata ($14.50), and a granola bowl ($13.50).

Listed on the menu are a handful of lighter fare options, including a house salmon sampler ($9.50), and a rocket, watercress and beetroot salad ($9.50). The Flying Pig also takes into account that some brunch-goers would prefer more lunchtime focused meals and prepares a range of heartier options like braised beef short rib jumbo macaroni ($14.50), and blackened Steelhead Trout ($15.50).

There’s also a few dessert specials that can be ordered off a rotating menu too. While those with a sweet tooth might be eager to end their meal with cake, others may be satisfied by the complimentary freshly baked banana bread that is brought to the table along with the menus — a thoughtful and delicious gesture.

While The Flying Pig contains a sizeable indoor space, the restaurant also boasts a pleasant sidewalk patio, which is perfect for summer brunching. While The Flying Pig at Olympic Village is happy to take over the phone reservations for brunch, they do not reserve seats on the patio, therefore patrons who wish to sit outdoors best turn up early to guarantee themselves a spot.

With consistently well-made meals, warm and attentive service, and a causal vibe, it’s no wonder that The Flying Pig is so well-liked by locals as a weekend brunch destination.
