Forget DIY interior design, these Vancouver-based experts can help you out

On a scale of one to 10, how much do you love where you live? We’re not talking about your neighbourhood because it’s what’s on the inside that counts. It’s the personality that you’ve got between your walls that turn a house into a home.

If you’re realizing your place doesn’t have that lovely lived-in feeling, it may be time to give your home a design overhaul. This doesn’t mean you have to go to the biggest furniture store you know and load up a trolley full of flatpack furniture and paints (that just sounds exhausting).

Instead, you can invest in original, high-quality pieces of furniture and get advice from design experts at Vancouver’s minimal design leader, Suquet Home. At the end of the day, your home should feel like it’s yours, and no one else’s.

Daily Hive spoke with Suquet designers Mike Nishio and Dean Lys, to find out more about the bespoke interior design services offered by the retailer.

What Interior design services do you offer?

Mike: For a standard on-site consultation, we can help with the design of one room or all rooms in the space, helping with floor plan and color scheme decisions along with any furniture, accessory, and minor built-in cabinet selections. This consultation can be up to an hour and a half long, however, if the client wishes to hire a designer to take on the project this is a possibility and we charge per hour.

Dean: We offer a full range of services from incorporating one new special piece into your home, all the way up to furnishing your entire space. We can also offer advice on colour selection and materials that will stand the test of time. Floor plans/layouts and storage solutions.

What do you feel are features that set your design service apart from other firms in Vancouver?

Mike: We have a strong focus on client relations and customer service. One of our values at Suquet Home is thoughtfulness; this applies to how we shape our brand and how we design spaces for our clients.

Dean: We pride ourselves on listening to our clients’ needs and helping to guide them towards their end vision.

How do you determine whether the interior design style would work for a client’s house?

Mike: One thing all of our designers do in any consultation is ask a lot of questions. As designers, there are very few times when we get to live in the spaces we design and we have to be aware of that. By asking the right questions to our clients we get a sense of what works for them, even the clients who “know nothing about their space” or “don’t have a clue how to put a room together,” know more than they think. It’s our job to pay attention to this and use our expertise to develop a guide a project to benefit the people we are designing for.

Dean: We ask them to show us the pieces in their homes that they love and are going to be keeping. We can then blend those existing pieces with new, complimentary items for an overall cohesive look.

Where do you derive your design inspiration?

Mike: Though looking at architecture and design around the world can be interesting and even awe-inspiring, we don’t stop there. A lot of our designers have other creative outlets to express themselves ranging from photography to music, we believe there should be no limit where we where we look for inspiration.

Dean: From everyday life. I love to travel and take inspiration from other cultures and countries. Inspiration is all around us. We just need to open our eyes and see the world as others do.

What is the cost of a design consultation?

For an in-store consultation, there is no charge. The client is free to pop-in during office hours (10 am to 5 pm) and we can have an impromptu meeting. Our on-site consultation fee is $95. However, this can be used as a credit towards any purchase. After that, if you would like to help with anything further the charge is $70 per hour.

How can clients go about booking an interior design consultation/appointment at Suquet Home?

Dean: Through our website, or just come into the store and introduce yourself to one of our designers. We’re actually very friendly!
