5 cruelty-free sunscreen options for your summer

Jun 6 2018, 1:42 am

We’ve been getting our fair share of sunshine these days after a long, grey winter in Vancouver. But while working on that summer tan, we cannot forget about a little box of sunscreen in our bags.

Sunscreen should always be the most essential part of every person’s skincare routine. When used on a regular basis, it can prevent your skin from getting cancer and sun damage.

To save you from having to compare over 600 sunscreens out there, we decided to show you our five favourites, which will keep your face and body protected and moisturized all summer.

And, as an added bonus, these five options are all animal-cruelty free, so you can feel good about choosing your new favourite.

1. Tarte Tarteguard 30 Vegan Sunscreen Lotion

This is a non-chemical sunscreen that leaves no greasy residue or white cast. It is very easy to dispense and apply, and it also doesn’t move around under your daily makeup. Although its SPF is not high enough for you to tan on the beach all day, it is a great little bottle for casual daily protection. And as a bonus, it also doesn’t have the typical “sunscreen smell.”

Where to buy: Sephora
Price: $40

2. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Sunscreen Moisturizer

This product is the combination of a moisturizer and a sunscreen. It is allergy-tested, free of artificial fragrances, and also cruelty-free. Although it does take a while for your face to absorb the sunscreen, once you rub it in, it does not leave a white film. And, in addition to blocking UV rays, it also has some great soothing and skin repairing ingredients.

Where to buy: Sephora
Price: $37

3. Shiseido Sun Protection Line

There has been an ongoing discussion about whether Shiseido is cruelty-free or not. The answer is yes — Shiseido is cruelty-free as a brand, at least in Canada. It offers all kinds of sunscreens you need: for your face, for your body, for children, and for water activities. All their products are water resistant for at least 40 minutes and up to 80 minutes. But be aware, some of these products might leave a slightly white cast.

Price: $28 to $49

4. Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery

Although it is a bit pricey, this two-in-one moisturizing sunscreen is worth every penny. With an SPF of 50, it is great for hot summer days. The product will leave your skin hydrated and plump without making your face feel greasy or oily. What we like the most about this product is that it can also minimize skin-ageing triggers.

Where to buy: Dermalogica or Sephora
Price: $99

5. Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Defense

The formula can feel a bit thick at first, but once you blend it in, it will stay light and moisturizing for hours. It doesn’t smell bad like a normal sunscreen would, and it’s also not irritating, even on sensitive skin. As a physical sunblock, this sunscreen does leave a white cast. But there is also a tinted version available, which can replace that white film with a lovely bronzed glow.

Price: $42
