Dragon boat festivities are returning this month.
That’s right, the eighth annual Dragon Boat Festival is taking place in the town of Steveston on Saturday, August 26.
And this year the event is set to be bigger and better than ever before, with an estimated 15,000 spectators anticipated on the shores of the Fraser River, where they’ll watch more than 1,100 local and international athletes compete against each other in a series of races.
The best part? It’s completely free to attend.
On the day, you’ll get to enjoy a wide range of activities taking place. This includes free concerts, a marketplace, an outdoor beverage garden, hands-on games, and of course, exciting race action.
All programs presented by the Steveston Dragon Boat Festival promote diversity and inclusiveness while also paying homage to the ancient activity dragon boating which has roots in Chinese culture.
Each 12-metre long dragon boat seats 20 rowers and also includes a steerperson, plus a drummer who makes music loud enough that you’ll be able to hear it through the crowds and over the sound of the thrashing paddles.

By attending the festival, you’ll be supporting the designated local charity Richmond Food Bank. The organization serves more than 1,500 residents in need on a weekly basis by providing them with nutritious meals.
