Photographer captures spirit of ‘Perfectly Imperfect’ dogs

As one of the world’s top pet photographers, Alex Cearns aims to capture the “adorable subtleties” that make all creatures precious and unique.

But while she loves every animal she photographs, those perceived as “different” hold a special place in her heart.

These are the ones who have lost a leg, were born without eyes, are suffering an illness, or still showing scars of former abuse. It is the resiliency and determination of these special beings that are captured in her new photography book “Perfectly Imperfect.”

The book features 60 perfectly imperfect dogs, each with their unique story. Like Pip, a young Balinese puppy suffering from a painful skin condition.

Pip, the Bali pup suffering from mange.

“Most animals with afflictions don’t dwell on them. They adapt to their bodies without complaint and they survive. They push on, always, wanting to be included and involved in everything,” she says.

In a society often obsessed with designer dogs and purebred puppies, Cearns photos deliver a strong message that favours shelter pups and underdogs: “Beauty is everywhere, and the outside is just window dressing.”

By giving disabled pets the same love as any other pet, she’s hoping to show potential adopters that it’s worthwhile to take a chance on these “misfits” and help them live happy and full lives.

“They make the most out of life and from them I have learnt so much about always seeing the positive in every situation and never giving up,” she tells Daily Hive.

Here’s a preview of images from her new book, Perfect Imperfection. Part of the proceeds benefit the Australian Animal Cancer Foundation, which is helping to find a cure for canine cancer.
