Late last night, a hospital in New Westminster was locked down due to an alleged gun threat.

At approximately 10:20 pm, police received reports of an armed man around the Sapperton Station area.

The man was seen entering the Royal Columbian Hospital through the underground parking garage.

As a response, the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) and Transit Police set up a perimeter and immediately placed the hospital on lockdown.

In addition, members of the Coquitlam RCMP, Surrey RCMP, and the Integrated Police Dog Services were called to the scene.

A thorough search of the hospital, as well as surrounding parking garages, was conducted, although the man wasn’t located.

Police later received information that the man had the intention of selling the rifle. CCTV footage has since been obtained for further investigation.

“Our investigation into this incident continues,” says Sergeant Jeff Scott. “It’s with good reason that the safe transportation of firearms is a matter we take very seriously.”

Right now, members of the NWPD are asking anyone who has any information or witnessed the armed suspect to call 604-525-5411.
