Food banks are a lifeline for more people than you think in Canada.

Year-round 860,000 Canadians in need rely on food banks.

And at this time of year, things are especially tough for them. Everyone wants to have enough food to survive the winter, and they should have access to it. With your help of food bank donations, they can.

But what often keeps people from donating are their commonly-held misconceptions about food banks.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with Kal Tire to debunk the top three myths that generally hold people back from donating.

They only take non-perishable foods

A common myth about food banks is that they accept only non-perishable foods like cereals and tinned goods. This isn’t the case. In fact, 40% of all donations are fresh food. And if you want to give a cash donation to your local food bank this is just as helpful so more fresh food can be purchased for families who need it in the community.

Don’t underestimate the power of a dollar. Although you may think it won’t go far, $1 actually provides three nutritious meals, since food banks can take advantage of bulk purchasing. Every little really does help.

It’s only the homeless who rely on food banks

The reality is that food banks are a highly used, vital service. With almost a million Canadians relying on food banks, what many people don’t know is that many users are families – and one in three users is a child. Many of these people also live in rural communities.

This year, you can help food banks and the families that need them by visiting Kal Tire.

When you purchase any set of four tires, Kal Tire will take $50 off the total price and they’ll also donate $50 to a food bank in your area. All you have to do is visit any participating Kal Tire location within the next two weeks to take advantage of the promotion.

All donations stay local and Kal Tire will be running this very special offer until December 15.
