Need a hobby? Check out these 6 cool courses for $40 and under

Chances are you have a hobby but you’re not sure if you want to study it.

Whether you’re looking into cooking, sewing, blogging, woodcarving and more, you can put your skills and passions to the test for $25 to $40.

Langara College is offering a Mini Night School on Saturday, September 10 that lets you figure out what you want to do with its quick courses. You can regularly commit to a four or eight week session but since making your mind up is difficult, Langara’s created an affordable teaser day to alleviate any uncertainty.

There are over 30 different options with a three hour course being $40 and a two hour course being $25, both of which you can buy tickets for online.

Here are just six of the courses being offered as part of the Mini Night School.

An Introduction to Dyeing

An introduction to the world of dyeing. Students will get an overview of different dyeing techniques as well as participating in a hands on demo.

Wine Appreciation

Learn about different types of wine, their qualities and what to pair them with. This is a short introduction to really appreciating wine.

DYI House Plans

Do you have a room in your house that you hate? Bring a picture of it to have a discussion with your instructor about what to remove or add, who you should hire, and the interior design of the room.

Intro to Fabric Selection

Learn to make your own earrings/pendant

In this course you will make a pair of earrings or a pendant by using a jewellers saw and roller printing.

15 Minute Meals

It’s 6 pm and you need dinner on the table fast. You and Chef Helena will be making lightning fast dishes that will only take 15 minutes to make.


Langara Continuing Studies at the Vancouver School Board has over 200 DIY courses offered from September to December and again from January to June. If you like your Mini Night School course and sign up for a regular one then can you’ll get the $25 or $40 credited back to your account – essentially making September 10 free.
