History made: Justin Trudeau becomes first Prime Minister to walk in Vancouver Pride Parade (PHOTOS & VIDEOS)

On Sunday afternoon, hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of downtown to take in the annual Vancouver Pride Parade, except this year many eyes were peeled to the front of the pack in search of one man: Canada’s Prime Minister.

Just as he did in 2015, Justin Trudeau set out to partake in this year’s parade – but this time he made some history in the process, becoming the first sitting Prime Minister to march in the Vancouver Pride Parade.

Along with his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, and three kids, Xavier, Ella Grace, and Hadrien, Justin Trudeau walked the entire 20-block route in Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood, stopping several times along the way to interact with the crowd.

“It’s a time where the whole city and families and communities come out. We celebrate the great diversity that is such a strength of our country. We celebrate community, we celebrate family, and all these things together means that we’re going to have a great Pride, and it’s a pleasure for me to be here,” he said before the parade started.

I know this isn’t the best photo of @justinpjtrudeau at #vanpride2016 but it’s *my* photo. l teared up seeing our beautiful first family happily strolling in the parade (a thing Trudeau has done for years) knowing that this is a freedom, among so many, we have as Canadians that many in this world don’t. Before PM Trudeau in the parade went all of the Aboriginal groups which I felt was a really great way to show respect. I’m so happy and lucky to live in this country, this city, & this neighbourhood with the leadership that we have.
