We’re taking a tasty tour of Vancouver’s many brunches to create The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide. This week we’re in South Granville to check out Heirloom Vegetarian’s genuinely delicious meat-free brunch.

Located at 1509 West 12th Avenue in Vancouver’s South Granville district, Heirloom Vegetarian offers a wonderfully chic, modern dining experience and come the weekend serves a fulfilling, meatless brunch that even the most devout carnivore will appreciate.

Keeping in line with the restaurant’s ambition of dishing up reliably fresh, nutritious vegetarian cuisine, brunch at Heirloom consists of a range of plant-based and vegan dishes. Not averse to cheese, eggs or dairy, the restaurant is neither strictly plants-only nor entirely vegan and shows diners that there’s life beyond salad and tofu.

Indeed, the kitchen prepares an inventive yet recognizable brunch spread featuring eggs Benedict, omelettes, breakfast sandwiches and a bounty of other delicious-sounding (and looking) plates. There’s just “no bacon, no sausage, nothing with a face”, says co-owner Gus Greer.

Making the most of their fresh vegetables, Heirloom offers several variations on the classic Eggs Benedict, including their avocado Eggs Benny with avocado, tomato and local sunflower sprouts; beet benny with tarragon, roasted beets and grilled red onion, and Southwest benny with chipotle black bean, slaw, spicy hollandaise and cornbread crumbs.

Served with roasted potatoes and a mixed green salad, Heirloom also whips up a variety of tasty omelette creations which include: mushroom, leeks, arugula and parmesan; asparagus, caramalized onion, oven-roasted tomatoes, goat cheese and basil, and aged cheddar, green onion, guacamole and pico do gallo.

Meat seekers might wonder where the meat is, but it’s not here. The meals at Heirloom are flavourful and filling without the heaviness that so often comes with a big breakfast.

In addition to delicious food offerings, diners have the choice of fresh pressed juices like the kale refresher (kale, pineapple, mint, green apple and soda), morning cocktails, tea and coffee. There’s also a dessert special. Nothing wraps up a meal quite like a raw brownie made up of dates, pecans, coconut and raw cacao, topped with a chocolate avocado ganache.

Although the food at Heirloom is a huge factor in alluring diners back time and time again, it is not the only thing. The eatery’s casual tone, friendly staff and gorgeous interior are also incentives to return. The high-ceilinged dining space has a clean, contemporary look and feel, featuring white-washed walls, exposed brick, weathered wooden floor boards, light timber tables and white chairs.

While Heirloom is not the cheapest brunch eatery around, it is on par with other restaurants that offer organic fare in Vancouver. Customers pay for quality, premium ingredients and as such are provided with a startling array of healthy brunch alternatives (great for those who want to eat clean). What’s more, the kitchen does all this without substituting flavour, ensuring that both vegetarians and meat-eaters alike leave feeling truly satisfied.
