How to keep your family happy (and distracted) this summer at Sun Peaks

Jul 20 2018, 1:14 am

Summer break is a time for many things: Exploration, relaxation, and family-focused fun. But most of all, it’s just a lot of time, period. Some could even say it’s way more time than anyone could realistically fill. And that leads to the most dreaded outcome of all: Bored kids.

To prevent that, why not take an impromptu family trip to Sun Peaks? Think about it, the beautiful BC resort has everything from scenic hiking to paddleboarding, golfing, mountain biking, and lots of sunshine, which makes it the perfect spot for a summer getaway.

Since Sun Peaks is hosting a wide range of free, all-ages events for Family Weeks, from now through August 10 (midweek), there couldn’t be a better time to visit. And you’ll get to enjoy everything from the driving range to Tod Mountain Café cookie decorating.

Getting there: You have the option to drive along the Trans-Canada Highway (4.5 hours) or get a quick flight from Vancouver to Kamloops and transfer onto a shuttle to the resort. The kids will be happy, you’ll be happy, it’s a win-win if you ask us.

Here’s a look at some of the complimentary activities you can enjoy if you visit Sun Peaks.

Bungee Trampolining

Feel exhilarated as you get launched into the sky and pulled back down on the bungee trampoline, located at the base of the Sunburst chairlift. There will be one complimentary ticket given out per guest, all you have to do is visit guest services from 11 am to 1 pm to check in. Then get ready to launch!

Enjoy a guided alpine hike

Meet your guide at Elevation Bike Shop and get ready to embark on an exciting hike through the Sun Peaks alpine trails from 1 to 3 pm. Remember to register at the bike shop ahead of time and bring your lift ticket with you.

Explore the inside of a fire truck at Sun Peaks Fire Hall where you can head out on a tour from 3 to 4 pm. You’ll also get some handy home safety tips at the end of your visit. Make sure to have transportation arranged ahead of time.

Saddle up for a pony ride

Bring the kids along to the base of the Sunburst chairlift where they can enjoy a complimentary pony ride from Sun Peaks Stables’ ponies. The activity takes place from 1 to 3 pm where riders are led around by stables staff.

See an outdoor theatre show

There’s a complimentary outdoor theatre show by the Rivertown Players taking place from 1 to 3 pm and you can find out the location in the village. In July it features Underwater Shipwreck, Superheroes, and Canadian Inventors, followed by Camping, Superheroes, and Pirates, in August.

Kamloops Drum Connection: Interactive rhythm workshop for families

The Raven’s Rhythms interactive workshop by Kamloops Drum Connection offers an introduction to drumming entertainment and a drum circle where all attendees get to learn about cultural beats, world music songs, play games, and more. Anyone can join or leave the circle at any point and you’ll probably come away feeling fantastic.
