A dynamic south Cambie Gateway project designed by Arno Matis Architecture

Designed to capture the vortex energy of the neighbouring Cambie Street bridgeway, the new “Gateway” building edges are fragmented and curved to evoke a sense of movement.

Designed by Arno Matis Architecture, this innovative ‘Gateway’ building, is a transit-oriented development located at the southwestern foot of the Cambie Bridge.

“A rare opportunity on a once-forgotten site, the commercial/residential mixed use project presents an avant-garde building form of cascading post-tensioned concrete cantilever floors and a layered screen façade that reflects light and distorts the boundaries between interior and exterior”.

Stylistic and Archi-tectonic themes include:

  • Dynamic free-form steel spandrels emphasize the vortex energy of the bridgehead site
  • The light reflecting color chosen to increase light penetration to the interior on overcast days
  • Spandrels are shaped and engineered to maximize passive solar shading
  • Employing architectural concrete, metal and glass to deliberately express a homogenous yet dynamic form
  • Intricately sculpted massing maximizes build-able square footage

  • Site area of approximately 643.7 square metres
  • Footprint area of approximately 398.8 square metres
  • Building height 20.8 metres

Consistently, Arno Matis Architecture used its proprietary ‘Responsive’ design approach to address the complex architectural and urban design challenges on the tight and peculiar shaped site.

Using site analytics to uncover cultural, social and economic forces impacting the site, South Creek Landing / Gateway acts as a design response to these external forces.
