Tiny furniture video goes viral in Vancouver

In a city of skyrocketing rents and tiny apartments, it was inevitable that tiny furniture would be next on most people’s shopping lists.

But Jared and Adam Joubert, of Expand Furniture, were still astonished when a recent video demonstrating their wares online went viral.

The video, which shows the pair turning sofas and beds into desks and dining tables, has already been watched more than 481,000 times on Facebook alone.

The Vancouver brothers started their furniture business almost four years ago. Jared told Daily Hive it all began with their own housing issues.

“We returned to Vancouver after a year away in Australia and realized rent and prices for property were really high. We were looking at smaller places to live in ourselves,” he said.

“Ultimately, there was a gap in the market for this type of furniture – kind of hard to find – or if you find it, it’s not the right size or right type.”

So he and brother Adam, a former national rugby player no less, decided to set up a convertible furniture business to help people save space.

Among the radical furniture they have invented is a desk that folds down into a set of office drawers, and a white cube that becomes five seats.

Jared says his favourite item is the MurphySofa, the product they started with – a sectional sofa by day, and a fold down bed by night.

But, he says, the customers’ favourite is the Italian Wall Bed and Revolving Bookcase – for “the James Bond factor.”

Let’s face it – no matter how small, we all need our own secret lair.
