Vancouver Police Constable Jason Doucette told Daily Hive that officers responded to reports of a collision on Commercial Drive near Victoria Drive just after 5 am. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a single vehicle crashed into a power pole.

The driver in his early 20s succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was the only occupant of the car.

The stretch of Commercial Drive from East 18th Avenue to Victoria Drive was closed throughout the morning to allow investigators to comb through the scene to collect evidence.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is in its early stages. Doucette says they will examine whether factors such as speed, drugs, alcohol, road conditions, and mechanical issues were a cause.

At this time, no additional information is available.

Officers also responded to the scene of another collision just hours earlier on Saturday night at the intersection of Cambie Street and West 8th Avenue. Three vehicles were involved, including one SUV that flipped over onto its roof.
