While you might not think about booze being a major cost around this time of year, it’s likely that when you check out your post-holiday bank statement, you’re going to see a fair bit of cash was spent on libations for the holidays.

It’s something that’s hard to avoid, as it’s the prime season to eat, drink, and be merry – so when you go to check this errand off your shopping list, let’s make some moves that will save your funds for gifts, markets, and festive shenanigans in general.

Johnny Q Cabernet Sauvignon – $14.99

A versatile and great value companion fit for any occasion. This Cabernet exudes aromas of cassis and mint, within a solid framework of blackcurrant and savoury characteristics and a kiss of oak. A finish which is long and smooth, you’ll want to enjoy with friends.

Chianti: Fontella – $14.99 (Retailing for $12.99 in December)

In the glass, a medium ruby colour, with aromas of red cherry, tomato leaf, leather, and spice. The palate is extra dry, with a solid structure of tannin and acidity. Expect flavours of tart cherry, with earthy and vegetal notes.

Malbec: Poncho Criollo Mendoza 1L – $12.99 (Retailing for $11.99 in December)

Named for the traditional garb of the Argentine cowboy (Gaucho), this wine is true to the country’s wine culture as the taste is rich in Malbec flavours.

Pinot Noir: Alta Maria Santa Barbara 2014 – $21.99 (Retailing for $14.99 in December)

Ripe and opulent style of Pinot Noir that Joe Wagner made famous with Meomi, this new wine from Santa Barbara County shows a deep ruby colour with an intense nose of ripe raspberry, blackberry, and cola with some smoke and cedar notes too.

Sauvignon Blanc: Lurton Les Fumees Blanches – $14.99 (Retailing for $12.99 in December)

This wine has a pale straw colour with citrus, gooseberry, and grassy aromas along with a soft note of smoke. It’s medium bodied with a crisp citrus flavour with a medium length finish.

Gewürztraminer Sumac Ridge 2017 – $13.99 (Retailing for $12.99 in December)

The number one selling Gewűrztraminer variety in BC, and for good reason. This wine has flavours of citrus and spice and possesses a delightful mouthcoating texture.

Bodacious – Bubbles $11.99 (Retailing for $10.99 in December)

This sparkling is refreshing, crisp and fruit-forward beverage has aromas of tropical fruit, citrus, and peach. This libation would pair beautifully with Spicy Asian or Indian dishes, light salads, or blue cheese.
