10 great events to check out at Vancouver Innovation150

A nationwide program from five leading science organizations known as Innovation150 celebrates Canada’s innovative past and sparks the ideas and ingenuity that will propel our future.

The interactive, yearlong program offers awe-inspiring experiences in science, technology, and innovation across the country for Canada’s 150th anniversary.

And this past weekend, those celebrations kicked off in Vancouver, with a variety of events and exhibits.

Global Physics Photowalk

  • What: An opportunity to go behind-the-scenes at eight of the world’s biggest particle physics laboratories.
  • When: On now until January 31, from 9 am to 10 pm daily.
  • Where: Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre – 181 Roundhouse Mews,  Vancouver

#discoverTHIS TRIUMF Public Tours

  • What: TRIUMF produces cutting-edge science that has a tangible impact on our daily lives. Discover this incubator for curiosity for yourself with TRIUMF’s public tours.
  • When: On now until February 3, from 1 pm to 2:30 pm daily.
  • Where: TRIUMF – 4004 Wesbrook Mall, Vancouver

QUANTUM: The Exhibition

  • What: QUANTUM: The Exhibition is the first-ever travelling show on quantum information science and technology.
  • When:  On now until February 26, from 10 am to 6 pm daily.
  • Where: Science World– 1455 Quebec Street

Power of Ideas Exhibit

  • What: This inspiring exhibition from Perimeter Institute enables youth and their families to take a hands-on approach to learning the process of science.

Grown Up Science Workshop

  • What: Hardware and software come together in this programming and design challenge.

Nerd Nite v24: Modern Archaeology, Improvisation, and Quantum Matter

  • What: Nerd Nite kicks off their third year by being part of  Innovation150.

Cosmic Nights

  • What: Discover the wonders of the universe and enjoy a drinks at this 19+ event: Time Travel, a party for the adventurer in all of us!
  • When: Thursday, January 26, from 6:30 pm  to 10 pm.
  • Where: HR Macmillan Space Centre – 1100 Chestnut Street, Vancouver

Starry nights at SFU:

  • What: Children, beginners and expert astronomers are invited to a free night of star gazing at the Trottier Observatory at SFU.
  • When: Friday, January 27, from 8 pm to 10 pm

SFU Cafe Scientifique

  • What: Explore these lesser known consequences of spinal cord injury, their impact on quality of life, and some strategies to improve function.

Pharmacology of Cannabis

GIRLsmarts4tech

  • What: If you’re a girl in grade 6 or 7, GIRLsmarts4tech is your chance to explore and learn about computer science.

Science Demonstration

  • What: Connect with experts from Decoda Literacy Solutions, Living Lab, the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology, and the Vancouver Public Library as we explore science and innovation with hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations and information sharing.
  • When: Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29, from 10 am to 2 pm.

Terry Fox Power of Ideas Tour

  • What: Power of Ideas Tour is coming to Terry Fox Secondary as part of Innovation150. Entrance is free and everyone will be invited to dress up in their best SCIENCE costume and come on in!
  • When: Thursday, February 2 from 9 pm until Friday, February 3 at 2 am.
