A 22-year-old man was arrested Wednesday morning after an overnight standoff with police in Burnaby.

Around 11 pm, Burnaby RCMP responded to a residence in the 7000-block of 21st Street for a report of a suspicious male with a firearm.

When police arrived at the residence, the suspect male refused to come out and comply with police demands.

“Out of concern for police and public safety, the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team and a negotiator were called to attend and nearby residents were evacuated,” said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Daniela Panesar.

After a “lengthy negotiation,” the man was ultimately arrested and taken into police custody at 8 am Wednesday morning.

No further details on the incident have been provided at this time.
