The beloved waffle is a versatile food that is no longer restricted to breakfast. Not only surpassing its griddle counterpart, the pancake, in popularity, restaurants are now offering savoury waffle options. The once-humble maple syrup-topped waffle has evolved into sophisticated savoury meal.

Here are seven places to get savoury waffles in Vancouver.

1. Nemesis Coffee

Only joining the Gastown food scene a mere month ago, Nemesis Coffee is not one to be underestimated. Their savoury waffle creations include the coffee smoked duck with red eye hoisin, which just inches out in popularity against their poached egg with farm meat, finished with country gravy and pickled onions.

2. 33 Acres Brewing

33 Acres is a beloved craft beer producer in Vancouver, however, to the surprise of many, 33 Acres also offers a delicious mouthwatering brunch at their Mount Pleasant storefront. Their menu is small, but includes their rendition on the classic Eggs Benedict which consists of a fluffy beer waffle topped by a poached egg, creamy smashed avocado, and a buttery hollandaise sauce.

With the opening of their second location on Seymour Street, Nero Belgium Waffle Bar has added a whole new selection of savoury waffles. Enjoy one of their fluffy Brussels waffles topped with Havarti cheese, arugula, grape tomatoes, a soft boiled egg and grainy dijon mustard. For something even more savoury, the Liege aux fromages is a grilled four-cheese liege waffle that is garnished with spicy tomato chutney and an arugula salad.

5. Patisserie Lebeau

At any given point, Patisserie Lebeau’s storefront boasts an exceptional selection of both Liege and Brussels waffles to choose from. Unlike other restaurants which offer a plain Brussels waffle with savoury toppings, Patisserie Lebeau adds ingredients like ham and cheese to the waffle batter. The best part: there is no need for knives and forks as you can enjoy their savoury waffles on the go!

6. Yolk’s

Savoury yet sweet, the classic chicken and waffle from Yolk’s sit-down restaurants is arguably one of the best in Vancouver. Expect a towering stack of perfectly seasoned fried chicken, fluffy brussels waffle, rich chicken gravy and Canadian maple syrup all held together by one long wooden skewer.
