The much-anticipated beach chair and umbrella rental program has officially launched at English Bay for the summer season.

In a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Vancouver Park Board commissioner Sarah Kirby-Yung said they hope it will make English Bay more inviting and accessible.

“It invites people to sit down, soak in the scenery, and stay a little while. This is a great service for those folks who want added convenience,” she said, adding not everyone is able to lug their own beach chairs around such as seniors and those who use public transit.

The rentals are supplied by a company called the Vancouver Shade Company, and they’ll deliver and set up the chairs and umbrellas wherever you want on English Bay beach. There will be 50 chairs available to rent.

Rentals will start at $5 an hour for chairs and $3 an hour for umbrellas, but day rates are also available. The umbrella and chair rental program is a two year pilot project that will be extended to other Vancouver beaches next year if it proves successful.

“I think this will be a very popular addition to Vancouver’s parks and beaches, and we’re looking forward to seeing how the public receives it,” Kirby-Yung said.

Vancouver Shade Company is also in talks with Milestones for a food delivery service that brings snacks and meals right to your beach chair setup. While they’re keeping mum on when this portion of the program will launch, here’s a sneak peek of the menu:
