Lions' Jeremiah Johnson named CFL Player of the Week

BC Lions running back Jeremiah Johnson has picked up the CFL Player of the Week honour this week after running for 159 yards on 16 carries on Friday night. That total is the most any CFL player has rushed for so far this season.

Johnson’s big night helped the Lions to a 38-27 win over the Montreal Alouettes, improving BC’s record to 8-3 heading into the bye week.

“Personally, I thought I did well hitting holes but it’s not only about me,” said Johnson. “It’s those front five that are blocking their butts off every single play. I’m grateful for those guys, grateful for the play calling, grateful for Jonathon throwing the balls and making it hard for them to figure out if it was run or pass.”

The powerful back has played well in his first year as a Lion, despite splitting the feature back duties with Anthony Allen. The pair never play in the same game, with head coach Wally Buono choosing to keep both backs fresh.

So far that strategy has worked, with Johnson and Allen combining for 794 yards rushing. That’s more than any single player in the CFL this season.

The Lions currently sit in second spot in the West Division. Their next game is on September 23 in Edmonton against the 5-6 Eskimos.
