Over 130 people in BC died from illicit drug overdoses last month

The BC Coroners Office says the province saw 134 drug overdose deaths in the province in July 2018 — a 25% increase from June 2018.

According to the new statistics, July was the second deadliest month so far in 2018 for fatal overdoses in BC.

March saw the highest overdose fatalities in 2018 so far, with 163 deaths recorded.

“The number of illicit drug overdose deaths in July 2018 equates to about 4.3 deaths per day for the month,” said the BC Coroners Office, in a report.

Vancouver, Surrey, and Victoria have experienced the highest number of overdose deaths in 2018 so far.

The BC Coroners Service says that to date, 875 people have died of illicit drug overdoses in 2018.
