With final absentee votes from last week’s election still to be counted, the BC NDP launched a public petition on Wednesday, asking British Columbians to support fixing “our broken electoral system.”

“People voted overwhelmingly to get big money out of politics, to move toward a proportional voting system and to stop funding partisan government ads with taxpayer money,” said Lisa Beare, the NDP MLA-elect for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, in a release.

The election results present “an unprecedented opportunity to work across party lines to make real changes that put people back at the centre of politics in BC,” Beare said.

“We’re asking British Columbians to send a clear message that it’s time to work together and make real changes to make our political system work better for people.”

Now is the time to “fix this broken system and the BC NDP will be working hard to get it done,” she said.
